The Stratton Millennium map stand has now been re-installed on the village green.

The map stand was blown over in a storm in early 2020, as the supporting legs had rotted through. The map stand has had the legs supporting it re-designed and now ‘chunky’ European green oak legs are holding it firmly in place. The Parish Council had already commissioned new, replacement information pages in November 2018.

The map was created for the 2000 Millennium, by a group of local villagers, fully supported by the Parish Council. The group, who were Mike Bowman, Maureen Putnam and Ian Gibson (now deceased), dealt with the historic data, artwork and the content, the theme being how Stratton was in the past, how it was at the millennium including developments over the preceding decade, specific historic aspects, village buildings and local nature.

When the map stand blew over, the original plan was for only the legs to be renewed. However, it was found that several other parts of the wooden support frame were damaged, loose, or rotting, so they were replaced as well. The original roof remains, although a small amount of work has still to be done to the top ridge.
